Project-based learning is where students gain knowledge and skills by investigating and responding to authentic, engaging, and complex questions, problems or challenges. It’s a teaching method you’ll often find in classrooms, homeschools and learning centers, and – most interestingly – it can vastly improve learning outcomes.

Additionally, students show higher levels of engagement throughout projects than is typical through lecture or traditional instruction. Encouraging students to take creative risks during projects can help build risk-taking skills, deviation and iterative thinking. And finally, studies have shown that students retain information longer, perform better on exams and the teaching style improves students’ abilities to work within groups and collaborate.
Not all project-based learning is created equal, however. Researchers have identified traits of projects that are critical for success:
- The project is based in reality and aligns with the students’ skills and interests
- The group is comprised of 3-4 students with varying strengths
- Team members are given interdependent roles and team rewards
- Multiple points of feedback, and opportunities for assessment throughout the project
